London has a reputation for being expensive, but some of the city’s best experiences are completely free. Whether you're visiting for a weekend, catching up with friends, travelling as a couple or exploring with family, there are plenty of ways to enjoy London without reaching for your wallet.
What’s more, plenty of London’s free attractions are easy to reach from The Resident Covent Garden, Soho and Victoria. From peaceful parks and rooftop views to museums and galleries you could happily spend hours exploring, here are some of the free things to do in London that our teams recommend to guests.
Take in the view from the Sky Garden
For one of the best free views in London, head to Sky Garden. Sitting high above the City, this indoor garden offers sweeping views across the capital, from The Shard and Tower Bridge to St Paul's Cathedral and Canary Wharf. Unlike many of London's viewing platforms, entry is free, although advance booking is highly recommended, particularly at weekends and during school holidays. It's equally enjoyable on a bright day or when London's skyline is glowing after dark. Getting there is straightforward via Monument or Bank station, both served by multiple Underground lines.
A tip from The Resident Insiders: Book an early morning slot for a quieter experience and some of the best light for photographs.
Wander along the South Bank
If you're looking for a classic London walk, it's hard to beat the South Bank. The route between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge combines some of the city's most recognisable landmarks with plenty of atmosphere along the way. You'll pass the London Eye, the National Theatre, the Southbank Centre, Shakespeare's Globe and Tate Modern, with street performers, pop-up installations and riverside views creating plenty of reasons to stop and explore. The walk works particularly well for couples and groups of friends, but it's also an easy way for families to see a lot of London without packing too much into the day. The nearest stations include Waterloo, Blackfriars and London Bridge, making it easy to join the route wherever suits your plans.
Explore Tate Modern
Even if you don't usually seek out art galleries, Tate Modern is worth a visit. Housed inside a former power station on the Thames, the building itself is impressive before you even step inside. Entry to the permanent collection is free, allowing visitors to explore works from some of the world's best-known modern and contemporary artists. The enormous Turbine Hall often hosts large-scale installations, while the upper floors offer impressive views across London. Located beside Blackfriars and Southwark stations, it's easy to combine with a South Bank walk or a visit to Borough Market.
