How to Spend the Perfect First Day in Edinburgh: A Locally-Inspired Itinerary
Date Published
Stop for Lunch in the Grassmarket
After a morning of sightseeing, head down to the Grassmarket. Once the site of Edinburgh's medieval marketplace, it's now one of the city's most popular gathering spots, framed by colourful buildings and impressive views of Edinburgh Castle. If you're visiting at the weekend, you'll often find markets and local traders adding to the atmosphere. For lunch, we'd recommend the Mussel Inn, a long-standing Edinburgh favourite known for its fresh Scottish seafood and welcoming atmosphere. It's an excellent choice if you'd like to try local produce before continuing your afternoon exploring the city. After lunch, spend a little time exploring the surrounding streets before continuing your Edinburgh adventure.
Spend the Afternoon Discovering Edinburgh's Quieter Side
Many first-day itineraries stick entirely to the city centre, but Edinburgh's charm extends far beyond its headline attractions. A short walk will take you to Dean Village, one of the most picturesque corners of the city. Once a grain-milling community, it's now known for its peaceful riverside setting, historic buildings and postcard-worthy views. From here, follow part of the Water of Leith Walkway, a scenic route that winds through the city alongside the river. The contrast with the bustle of the Old Town is striking, and it's a lovely way to experience a gentler side of Edinburgh together.
Browse the Independent Shops of Stockbridge
If there's time, continue on to Stockbridge. This stylish neighbourhood has a village-like feel despite being only a short distance from the city centre. It's one of our favourite places to spend an afternoon, thanks to its independent bookshops, homeware stores, artisan food shops and welcoming cafés. Unlike the busy shopping streets found in many cities, Stockbridge feels distinctly local. It's the kind of place where you can wander around without much of a plan and still discover something interesting.
Tip from The Resident Insiders: If you're visiting Stockbridge, make time for a stroll through nearby Inverleith Park. The views back towards the Edinburgh skyline are often just as impressive as those from the more famous viewpoints, and it's usually much quieter.
Head Up Calton Hill Before Dinner
Few places offer a better introduction to Edinburgh than Calton Hill. As the afternoon turns to evening, make your way to the summit and take in sweeping views of the city skyline. You'll see Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, the Old Town and the Georgian streets of the New Town all laid out before you. It's one of the city's most photographed viewpoints, but somehow never loses its magic.
End the Day with Dinner and Drinks
Edinburgh's food scene has flourished in recent years, with everything from traditional Scottish cooking to modern dining experiences available within walking distance of the city centre. For a relaxed first evening, we'd recommend choosing somewhere that encourages you to settle in and enjoy the atmosphere. Kyloe is a popular choice for Scottish beef and local produce, while Copper Blossom offers a welcoming setting and an excellent cocktail menu. After dinner, take one final stroll through the illuminated streets of the Old Town. The crowds begin to thin, the historic buildings glow under the streetlights, and the city takes on an entirely different character. It's the perfect ending to a first day in Edinburgh and usually the moment visitors realise they need to book another trip.
