Oxford Street certainly has its place. If you're looking for familiar brands, buzzy crowds and almost everything you need in one place, you'll find plenty to browse. But some of the capital’s best shopping experiences happen away from the flagship stores and big chains. London’s neighbourhoods are filled with artisan boutiques, family-run bakeries, specialist bookshops, independent jewellers and design-led homeware stores that offer something a little more memorable than another high-street purchase. They're the places Londoners return to time and again. If you're staying in London and fancy seeing a more local side of the city, this is where we'd suggest starting.
Papersmiths, Chelsea
For anyone who loves beautiful stationery, Papersmiths is worth a detour. This independent shop takes notebooks, pens and desk accessories seriously, stocking everything from elegant journals to thoughtfully designed gifts. Even if you're not in the market for a new notebook, it's the sort of place that inspires you to pick one up anyway. It's particularly handy if you're looking for a souvenir that's a little more thoughtful than a fridge magnet.
Nearest Tube: Sloane Square
Daunt Books, Marylebone
Few bookshops in London are as instantly recognisable as Daunt Books. Housed inside an Edwardian building with oak galleries and skylights, it's one of the city's most beautiful places to browse. Unlike many larger bookshops, travel writing is organised by destination rather than genre, making it wonderfully easy to lose an hour dreaming about future adventures. Even if you leave empty-handed, the building itself is worth seeing.
Nearest Tube: Baker Street
Maya Magal, King's Cross
If you're searching for jewellery with a more personal touch, Maya Magal creates contemporary pieces designed and handcrafted in London. The brand's workshop-inspired store in Coal Drops Yard feels a world away from the standard jewellery chains. You'll find delicate necklaces, rings and bracelets that make meaningful gifts or keepsakes from your time in the city.
Nearest Tube: King's Cross St Pancras
Labour and Wait, Shoreditch
Part homeware store, part celebration of timeless design, Labour and Wait specialises in beautifully made everyday objects. Think enamelware, wooden brushes, kitchen tools, gardening accessories and household items you didn't realise could look quite so good. Everything feels practical and built to last, while still being beautiful to look at. It's a brilliant place to pick up a gift, although you'll probably end up wanting most of it for yourself.
