Liverpool is a city that rewards curiosity. While its famous waterfront and musical heritage are well worth experiencing, some of the best moments come from wandering down a side street, discovering an independent café or stumbling across a recommendation you'd never find in a guidebook.
For first-time visitors, the temptation can be to try and fit everything into a single day. Our advice? Slow down. Liverpool is a city best enjoyed at a more relaxed pace, leaving room for spontaneous discoveries and a few unplanned detours along the way. Whether you're on a romantic weekend break or enjoying a friends’ trip, here's how we'd spend the perfect first day in Liverpool.
Start Your Day in the Ropewalks
One of the best things about staying at The Resident Liverpool is that many of the city's highlights are within easy walking distance. Begin your day in the Ropewalks, a buzzy neighbourhood known for its independent businesses, converted warehouses and creative energy. It's a great place to get your bearings and experience a more local side of the city before heading towards the better-known landmarks. Take your time over breakfast and a good coffee before setting out. We often recommend Bold Street Coffee, a local favourite that's long been popular with both visitors and Liverpudlians alike, or LEAF, where you can settle in for a leisurely brunch before a day of exploring.
Tip from The Resident Insiders: Liverpool is a wonderfully walkable city, so comfortable shoes will go a long way.
Stroll Down to the Waterfront
Once you've fuelled up, make your way towards Liverpool's iconic waterfront. The Royal Albert Dock remains one of the city's most recognisable destinations, and for good reason. Historic warehouses line the waterside, while museums, galleries, restaurants and cafés create a lively atmosphere throughout the day. Rather than rushing from attraction to attraction, spend some time simply soaking up the surroundings. Pause to admire the views across the River Mersey, browse a gallery or stop for a coffee overlooking the dock. It's the perfect introduction to Liverpool's maritime heritage and one of the easiest places to understand what makes the city so distinctive.
