When the London weather does what London weather does best, it doesn't mean the family day out has to be cancelled. In fact, some of the city's most memorable experiences happen indoors. Beyond the well-known museums, there are plenty of places where children can climb, create, explore and let their imaginations run wild in drizzly weather. Whether you're visiting for a weekend break or looking for inspiration during a family stay in the capital, these are a few of our favourite indoor activities for rainy days in London.
Step into a story at Discover Children's Story Centre
Part playground, part literary adventure, Discover Children's Story Centre in Stratford is designed to inspire creativity and imagination. Interactive exhibits, storytelling sessions and themed play spaces encourage children to become part of the story rather than simply listen to one. It's particularly good for younger children, with plenty of opportunities for hands-on exploration. If you're travelling with little ones who need room to move, climb and play, this is the kind of place where a few hours can disappear surprisingly quickly.
Tip from our Insiders: Pair your visit with lunch nearby in Stratford before heading back into central London.
Have a go on the rides at Babylon Park
Tucked away in Camden, Babylon Park is London's first indoor theme park. Filled with arcade games, rides and family-friendly attractions, it's a welcome escape for families with older children when heavy rain puts outdoor plans on hold. The space-themed setting makes it feel a little different from the usual arcade experience, and there's enough variety to keep children entertained whether they're keen on racing games, spinning rides or simply collecting tickets for prizes.
Solve challenges together in an escape room
Escape rooms might sound like something reserved for adults, but several venues across London offer family-friendly experiences designed for younger participants. Working together to solve clues, unlock puzzles and complete challenges can be a surprisingly enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. It's also one of those rare activities that genuinely engages everyone. If you're travelling with older children or teenagers, it's a great alternative to another gallery or attraction.
