Whether you're looking to stretch little legs between sightseeing stops or spend an afternoon exploring Edinburgh's green spaces, the Scottish capital is full of family-friendly walks that combine fresh air, fantastic views and plenty to keep children engaged along the way. From historic routes through the heart of the Old Town to peaceful riverside paths and city parks, these walks are made to enjoy at your own pace and are all within easy reach of The Resident Edinburgh.
1. Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace
Length: 3.2km
Time: Around 1 hour
Distance from The Resident Edinburgh: Approximately 1.5km to Edinburgh Castle (around 20 minutes on foot)
A walk between two of Edinburgh's most famous landmarks might sound ambitious with children in tow, but this route is surprisingly manageable. Following the Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, you'll pass street performers, historic closes and museums too. Break up the walk with a stop at one of the many family-friendly cafés, bakeries and ice cream shops for a mid-walk treat. It's mostly downhill, making it easier for little legs, and there's always something new to spot along the way. For families visiting Edinburgh for the first time, it's a wonderful introduction to the city's history without feeling like a history lesson. From The Resident Edinburgh, you can walk to the castle in around 20 minutes, making this one of the easiest routes to enjoy without needing public transport or a car.
2. Holyrood Park Circular
Length: 5.3km
Time: 1.5 to 2 hours
Distance from The Resident Edinburgh: Approximately 3km (around 15 minutes by taxi or 35 minutes by public transport and walking)
This family-friendly loop explores the edges of Holyrood Park without requiring the steeper climb to the top of Arthur's Seat. Following paths around lochs, dramatic cliffs and open green spaces, it's an excellent choice for families looking to experience Edinburgh's natural side while staying close to the city centre. Pack a picnic and enjoy it beside St Margaret's Loch, or head to nearby Holyrood Road afterwards where you'll find a range of cafés and casual lunch spots. It's a great option for a sunny afternoon when everyone wants a little space to roam. The park is easily reached by bus from the city centre, while those travelling by car will find parking available around the park's perimeter, though spaces can fill up during busy periods.
