Roald Dahl’s Beloved Classic Takes Centre Stage in Edinburgh

4 – 22 March 2026

Matilda The Musical returns to the Edinburgh Playhouse with all the colour, cleverness and irrepressible spirit that have made it one of the most beloved modern musicals. Based on the much-loved book by Roald Dahl and brought to life by an award-winning creative team with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, the story centres on a bright young girl whose imagination and courage help her shape her own destiny against formidable odds. What unfolds is a joyous blend of humour, heart and theatrical ingenuity that feels both timeless and thrillingly alive.

The production’s witty score and dazzling choreography delight families and theatre lovers alike while its sharp-witted charm resonates far beyond the auditorium, giving adults and children plenty to laugh and reflect upon. On stage at the Playhouse, Matilda’s rebellion against injustice, her bond with her gentle teacher Miss Honey, and her gleeful stand against the fearsome headmistress Miss Trunchbull are delivered with infectious energy, inventive staging and a palpable sense of fun. This is an evening of live theatre that captures the magic of stories that refuse to be silenced and characters who refuse to be underestimated.
