Step into Subterranean Elevator, an immersive artwork by Di Mainstone at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum in Birkenhead. Visitors enter an elevator-shaped chamber where soft, earth-like textures cover the floor, creating a tactile and inviting space to stand, sit or lie down. As projections and soundscapes unfold, the experience becomes a dreamlike descent into the earth, where flickering subterranean creatures and neural pathways blur the line between soil and subconscious.

The artist describes this as a journey into “subnosis”, offering a reflective and sensory exploration of biodiversity, human emotion and our hidden connection to the natural world. The installation combines visuals, sound and touch in a way that encourages calm contemplation and collective wonder.

Shoes are removed before entering, heightening the physical experience and encouraging a slower, more mindful pace. The softly lit environment, with its textured surfaces and shifting images, creates an atmosphere that is both meditative and thought-provoking.
