Burns Night in Edinburgh

  • Dancers in traditional Scottish attire perform, focusing on their feet. They wear tartan kilts, white knee-high socks, and black shoes on a wooden floor. String musicians with cellos set the scene for a spirited Burns Night celebration in the background.
  • A neoclassical monument with columns stands prominently on a grassy hill, set against a backdrop of partly cloudy skies and rolling hills. As if preparing for Burns Night, warm sunlight highlights the structure, enhancing its intricate architectural details.

Burns Night, held annually on 25 January, honours the life and legacy of Scotland’s beloved national poet, Robert Burns. More than just a celebration of poetry, Burns Night offers a feast of culture, history, and Scottish pride.

Whether you’re a first-time attendee or a seasoned visitor, join the festivities and toast Scotland’s favourite poet.

The History of Burns Night

Burns’ influence on the Scottish culture cannot be overstated. Famous for beloved poems including Address to a Haggis or an ode To a Mouse, the legendary Scottish Poet has been historically praised for preserving Scotland’s language, heritage, and culture through his poetry.

First celebrated in 1801, five years after Burns’ death, Burns Night was first created when a group of his friends and admirers gathered to honour him with dinner, poetry and a toast to his legacy. Since then Burns has been celebrated across Scotland every January, but nowhere does Burns Night better than his hometown, Edinburgh.
